Be The Voice: A Paradigm-Shift in Design for Social Impact
We firmly believe in the transformative power of design to shape perceptions, challenge norms, and ignite change. Recently, we had the privilege of collaborating with Wellsprings for Women on an exceptional project: the creation of "Be The Voice" magazine. This project aimed to raise awareness of family domestic violence (FDV) within the Arabic, Afghani, and Indian communities. Our involvement in this project held deep meaning for us, as it allowed us to not only amplify the voices of remarkable women but also push the boundaries of traditional perceptions. Through our design work, we sought to empower these women, while showcasing the immense potential of design to address pressing societal issues.
When we started the "Be The Voice" project, we recognised the incredible opportunity to redefine the conventional perception of an information resource tool. We understood that alongside the facts, figures, and other valuable resources, the stories of the Wellsprings Women held immense significance. Their lived experiences, emotions, thoughts, and reflections were essential pieces of information from which readers are gifted invaluable insights. We sought to transcend mere functionality and immerse our audience in a profoundly engaging experience. By daring to present the project in the form of a magazine rather than a conventional brochure, we aimed to challenge norms and create a dynamic platform that would captivate and inspire readers. Moreover, it became a powerful medium for the Wellsprings Women to amplify their voices, share their stories, and assist their healing journeys.
Our design approach for "Be The Voice" was driven by the desire to create a lasting impact and promote positive change. We worked alongside Hannah Wright and Aviva White to carefully curate content that included accurate information, personal stories, visual aids, and expert insights, ensuring that each element served a purpose. By incorporating multiple languages and embracing the diverse voices of the women, we aimed to foster inclusivity and empower readers to engage with the issue of FDV.
Central to our approach was a conscious effort to decolonise design by amplifying the voices and experiences of marginalised communities. By collaborating with Wellsprings for Women and involving the women directly in the creation of the magazine, we prioritised their agency and ensured that their stories were authentically represented. We were mindful not to edit their stories, to keep who they are intact. This decolonial design thinking allowed us to challenge power imbalances, elevate marginalised perspectives, and foster a more inclusive narrative surrounding FDV.
βIts not often a physical health promotion product gets me excited, but this magazine focused on family violence from Wellsprings for Women is amazing! Even if you don't work in this sector, check it out for its innovative use of multiple languages, inclusion of audio clips and descriptions via QR codes (including stories of women and others in their own voices) and all round beauty in design. What a powerful product that can be used in multiple ways with multiple language groups to talk about and share experiences of family violence.β - Judy Gold
